Strange Fire

“Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled incense over them. In this way, they disobeyed the Lord by burning before him the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded. So fire blazed forth from the Lord’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the Lord.” Leviticus 10:1-2

Powerful word. Aaron’s sons tried to bend the rules, knowing exactly what the Lord’s requirements were.

Unfortunately a lot of people are doing the same today…a lot of churches, even. They are offering up to the Lord strange fire. How? By mixing and adding the commandments of the Lord with their own sinful desires.

A very common example: A couple living together while one or both may be faithfully attending church and are actually involved. The truth is, no amount of good they accumulate will erase God’s Word. He makes no exception for this couple or the next.

Couples living together that are not married are living in disobedience. So when they think God will bless their relationship and/or home because of their good works, they’re deceived. When they worship with this mindset that they can receive blessings by obeying parts of the Bible, they are indeed offering up strange fire unto the Lord.

This is just one example. Here are a few more:

  • Running a church or Christian organization while being deceitful about the funds coming in and going out (regarding members and the government)
  • Preaching on Sundays, while blatantly living like a heathen every other day of the week.
  • Dancing, shouting, and acting a fool to appear holy and righteous to pastors, leaders, and anyone else who will pay attention to you.

Remember, strange fire is offered up from people who know they are not living or doing what God commanded.
